Caption Extractor

What it does

Paste a link to a public Facebook or Instagram post and it reads back the caption — the text the person wrote under their video or photo — along with the account name, the date and a thumbnail. You can copy the text with one click.

It reads the post's description only. The video itself is not copied here, and the thumbnail is loaded straight from Facebook or Instagram. Every result links back to the original post.

Who can use it

Reading captions is open to everyone. No account, no sign-up, nothing to install.

Saving a video to a file is not public. It lives in a separate admin area that the server itself protects: the browser asks for a username and password before the page will even load, and only the site owner has those. That is deliberate — a public one-click button that hands out anybody's video is a way of giving away other people's work. If you are a visitor, the captions are the tool, and nothing here is being withheld from you.

Cookies

A cookie is a small note a website leaves in your browser so it can recognise you on a later click.

This site does not put any cookie in your browser. The admin area is protected by the web server's own login prompt rather than by a cookie, and the public page needs nothing to remember you by.

The Instagram session, on the server

Instagram hides most posts from anyone who is not logged in, which is why Instagram links often fail here while Facebook links work. To get around that, the owner can save a copy of their own Instagram login onto the server, so the tool can ask Instagram as a logged-in account.

It is used for one thing: asking Instagram for a post so its caption can be read. It is never shown on this page, never sent to anyone, and never handed to another website.

• It is used only for admin requests, so visitors cannot make requests through the owner's Instagram account.
• It is kept in a locked file that this website cannot serve, even by accident.
• Anything read with it is kept apart from what visitors see, so a private post can never appear in someone else's result.
• It can be removed at any time, and the tool keeps working without it.

What is kept

Captions are held in memory for an hour so repeat lookups are quick, then dropped. Downloaded videos are deleted automatically after 24 hours. There is no account system, no tracking and no advertising.
